Easiest Ways to Buy Bitcoin & Altcoins

4 January 2019

Exchanges are the standard way of making your first purchase in cryptocurrency and provide one of the easiest ways to convert fiat currency into cryptocurrency. However, barriers can arise when making purchases through exchanges. Some exchanges limit the locations in which they operate in. Others only cater for purchasing with a small number of fiat currencies. The set-up process and wallet can also be complicated. In this post, we present a variety of straightforward exchanges which facilitate purchasing cryptocurrency with fiat currency so that readers can choose the option which best suits their situation.

Coinbase Consumer

Coinbase is typically the first stop for most beginners. It is designed to be clear and straightforward for beginners to use and understand. The process of funding the account and storing funds is simplified. Once users have set up an account, they can fund their account with fiat currency through either SEPA transfer or wire transfer. Supported fiat currencies include EUR, USD, and GBP. Coinbase has a strong focus on regulation so they ask for users personal details when they sign-up and also ask them to verify their identity with a government-issued identification document. This is a drawback for users who wish to remain anonymous but it also means that users benefit from purchasing their cryptocurrencies from an exchange that complies with regulations and that has a strong reputation to protect.

Once the account is funded, users will have their fiat currency in its own wallet. When a purchase is made, the purchased cryptocurrency will have its own wallet on the interface. Supported cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ethereum Classic, Bitcoin Cash, and 0x Project. From their account, users can easily manage their cryptocurrencies. The user can easily send and receive and view all the transactions for their account. Coinbase recently launched the Coinbase Bundle option where users can purchase a basket of supported cryptocurrencies weighted by market cap.

Coinbase also has another service, Coinbase Pro, which provides tools for more advanced traders. Users of Coinbase Pro also avail of lower fees. To use Coinbase Pro, users need to go through further verification of their account.

CEX

CEX is another exchange which offers both an easy option for users to purchase cryptocurrencies and a more advanced exchange for traders who wish to participate in more professional trading. CEX offers a quick-buy option where users are quoted amounts of cryptocurrency that they can purchase for $200, $500, or $1000. There is also the ability to customise the amount to be purchased. The cryptocurrencies can be purchased with either Visa or Mastercard. The fiat currencies supported include EUR, USD, GBP, and RUB. Support for RUB provides a competitive advantage to CEX with not many exchanges supporting purchasing with RUB. The quoted amounts are recalculated every two minutes to cater for market changes.

There is support for a wide number of cryptocurrencies. This includes Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Litecoin, XRP, Stellar Lumens, and Zcash. The more advanced exchange provides trading tools including the order book, price chart, trades printing, and depth. Similar to Coinbase, traders who are using the more advanced exchange avail of lower fees.

OKEx

One of the main barriers faced when purchasing cryptocurrencies is the exchange not providing support for the fiat currency which you use. Hong-Kong headquartered OKEx has been rolling out an expansion of their operations into North and South America. This involves supporting South American currencies such as the Argentine Pesos which not many exchanges provide support for. OKEx also has support for a wide number of cryptocurrencies with over 170 altcoins offered for trading against Bitcoin. They also offer advanced trading tools and derivatives for traders who wish to use leverage and take short positions. The tools offered include price chart, order book, and depth chart. One of the key limitations of OKEx is that it does not yet provide support for Euro trading.

Bittrex

If altcoins are the focus, Bittrex is one of the best exchanges to consider. Bittrex was for a long time operating as strictly a crypto-to-crypto exchange but launched support for USD trading in 2017. Using Bittrex to purchase cryptocurrencies offers a number of advantages. The fees are low for the exchange. There is a large number of cryptocurrencies offered for trading with over 500 altcoins available to be traded against Bitcoin. The exchange also offers key tools for advanced traders including price charts along technical analysis tools, an order book, a depth chart, and recent trades printing.
