The new information on October 20 was the precise activation height, recorded in an open specification pull request and reflected on Zakura’s dashboard. That reduces one uncertainty, even though it does not remove implementation or network risk.

Second, a stronger wider market. Bitcoin was also positive in the checked rolling window, so ZEC was not rising in isolation. The much smaller increases in XMR and DASH show that this particular ZEC move cannot simply be described as every privacy coin moving together. There may be renewed attention on privacy-focused assets, but price action alone does not demonstrate an increase in private payments or shielded adoption. For the longer-running context, I would compare this session with Cryptolinks’ earlier ZEC privacy-coin rally analysis and its privacy coins directory.

Third, momentum and positioning. ZEC’s sharp move could reflect traders responding to the news, existing momentum or short-term speculation. Without a timestamp-aligned futures, funding and liquidation dataset, I would not label today’s gain a proven short squeeze, a wave of institutional buying or a direct one-to-one consequence of the NU7 decision. Readers who want that market distinction can review the Cryptolinks crypto futures and derivatives guide.

For me, the strongest defensible conclusion is that the rally coincided with fresh deployment clarity against a positive market backdrop. The available data cannot allocate a precise percentage of ZEC’s price move to each cause.

What exactly did developers agree on for NU7?

The sequence matters:

September 17: A community timeline named November 5 as the intended mainnet date and October 20 as the decision point; these were planning targets, not activated chain rules.

October 4: NU7 activated on public testnet at block 4,465,026, earlier than the originally estimated October 6 date. Zcash Foundation engineering reporting and Unchained’s testnet report corroborate that event.

October 20: Following the testnet period, the ZIP editors agreed on mainnet block 3,543,405. The pull request proposing the height had two approvals but remained open at my cutoff.

October 21: The deployment ZIP still read Draft and Mainnet: TBD. The released Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 and Zakura 1.6.0 supported the testnet rollout; I had not verified a stable mainnet release incorporating the newly agreed height.

That is why “developers agreed on an activation height” is accurate, while “NU7 is live on mainnet” is not. Blocks arrive through mining, not on a calendar alarm. The actual date depends on when the network reaches 3,543,405, and a production rollout still requires compatible software and operator readiness.

I would keep the Zebra mainnet readiness tracker open. It documents remaining release and synchronization work; the next check is whether those issues are resolved and operators can upgrade safely before the height.

What do 25-second Zcash blocks actually change?

The biggest headline feature is straightforward: NU7 changes the target average interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds under ZIP 218. A block is a batch of confirmed transactions. More frequent blocks should improve how quickly an eligible payment gets its first inclusion opportunity.

But target block time is not a promise that every block will take exactly 25 seconds. Proof-of-work block discovery varies. A broadcast transaction still has to reach miners, qualify for inclusion and avoid being displaced by more competitive transactions. After inclusion, a recipient decides how many confirmations to require; that policy does not automatically change when a protocol target changes.

For a hypothetical service waiting for three blocks at the respective target averages, the nominal interval associated with three confirmations changes from about 225 seconds (3 × 75) to 75 seconds (3 × 25). This assumes the same confirmation count, steady average block production and prompt transaction inclusion. It does not mean that three confirmations provide identical reversal protection under every network or attack scenario, nor does it establish instant or deterministic finality. An exchange can continue requiring its own number of blocks or an elapsed-time policy.

Throughput has constraints too. NU7 specifies a 330-unit shared shielded-action budget per block, alongside individual Orchard, Ironwood and Sapling limits. Under the proposal’s defined two-action Orchard transaction model, theoretical capacity rises from approximately 2.9 to 6.6 transactions per second—roughly 2.3 times, not automatically three times, and not a universal throughput figure for all payment types. Validation load, propagation, mempool behavior and wallet synchronization still matter. ZIP 218 explains those trade-offs.

The testnet offers useful preliminary evidence, not a performance guarantee. The Zakura dashboard was not providing a fresh live reading at the research cutoff; its stored observation was built October 20 at 22:13 UTC and displayed a median 18.0-second gap across its last 300 observed intervals. A median below 25 seconds is not a contradiction: the mean target and the distribution’s median are different statistics. I would avoid comparing that small testnet window with an unrelated mainnet sample or declaring the post-upgrade experience proven before mainnet runs the same rules.

Does NU7 end shielded Zcash? What Sprout holders should do

No. NU7 does not end shielded Zcash. The planned consensus rule disallows transaction version 4, while versions 5 and 6 remain valid formats. That distinction matters because v4 can contain transparent-only and Sapling activity as well as Sprout transfers. Services still creating v4 transactions need to switch to supported versions. ZIP 2003 and ZIP 259 specify the rule.

Sprout is the exceptional case. It was Zcash’s original shielded pool, and its funds can only be spent using the transaction formats being prohibited. At the activation height, any ZEC left in Sprout would therefore lack a supported spending path under NU7 consensus. That is a real access risk, but not a claim that those coins are cryptographically destroyed: the specification explicitly leaves open the theoretical possibility of a future recovery rule, with no guarantee that one will ever be introduced.

If you have an old
zc...
shielded address, a legacy
wallet.dat
or old
zcashd
records, treat this as a specialized recovery problem. Confirm that you actually control Sprout notes, preserve copies of your wallet material, and follow the original Zcash Sprout-to-Sapling documentation only after checking present-day software compatibility. The historical zcashd 6.12.0 release notes describe a faster migration tool, but
zcashd
has since been retired as a maintained full-node solution. There is no safe, universal one-click procedure I can endorse for every old wallet. The governing deadline is block 3,543,405, not a guaranteed wall-clock moment on November 5.

For modern transparent, Sapling, Orchard or other supported holdings, the issue is different: make sure the wallet, custodian or signing service produces supported transactions and supports the upgraded chain. A normal software update and a migration out of the Sprout pool are not the same operation. If you are comparing wallet custody options, start with the Cryptolinks wallet directory, but check the actual provider’s NU7 announcement before taking action.

How the NU7 fee changes and Network Sustainability Mechanism work

The Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) is frequently described as a fee burn. That is an incomplete description.

Under ZIP 235, NU7 removes 60% of the total transaction fees in each block from circulating issuance, rounding down to whole zatoshis. The remaining 40% is available to the miner under the ordinary fee-allocation rules. The removed portion is accounted for in a public consensus-state NSM Value Balance, not placed into an ordinary discretionary wallet and not permanently destroyed.

Illustrative example: Suppose all transactions in one block pay 0.01 ZEC in aggregate fees. The scheduled accounting would send 0.006 ZEC to the NSM balance and make 0.004 ZEC available to the miner. That splits the fees already paid; it does not mean a user’s transaction fee rises by 60%, falls by 60% or becomes free.

Under the halving-preserving design in ZIP 237, the accumulated balance becomes eligible for automatic additional block-subsidy issuance at a later network height, while the existing halving framework remains in place. The October 20 open activation-height proposal includes block 8,939,664 as the calculated mainnet NSM reissuance start—projected around February 2031, subject to finalized deployment rules and the actual chain cadence. This is a consensus rule for future rewards, not a discretionary promise to pay a particular holder.

Shorter blocks also require smaller scheduled rewards per block to avoid tripling ZEC issued per day. ZIP 218 divides the scheduled per-block subsidy by approximately three and adjusts remaining block-height-based halving intervals to preserve their wall-clock timing. Tiny rounding differences exist, but the consensus design preserves the 21-million-ZEC supply cap. Scheduled issuance, issued/circulating supply and ZEC temporarily recorded in the NSM balance are different quantities; “60% of fees are permanently burned” and “Zcash becomes automatically deflationary” are not conclusions supported by the deployed design.

One more distinction is worth making: Zcash also has a separate conventional-wallet-fee proposal, ZIP 2009, reducing the marginal fee recommendation from 5,000 to 1,000 zatoshis per logical action. The Zebra release candidate schedules that mainnet policy transition at block 3,590,000, after the proposed NU7 activation height. That is not the same change as the NSM’s 60/40 fee allocation and should not be presented as proof NU7 itself cuts every user’s fees.

Zcash before and after NU7: the practical changes

Topic

Before NU7

Scheduled change

Practical implication

Important limitation

Block production

75-second target

25-second target

More frequent inclusion opportunities

Individual gaps and settlement policies still vary

Confirmation experience

Based on existing block cadence

Shorter nominal time for a fixed block count

Some recipients may credit sooner

Same confirmation count is not a universal security equivalence

Transaction versions

v4, v5 and v6 can be valid under existing rules

v4 prohibited; A stable network after activation is stronger evidence of execution.

Before NU7 activates, I would check whether the exact height is merged into ZIP 259, whether Zebra and Zakura both publish mainnet-ready releases containing it, and whether exchanges, miners, indexers and wallets confirm their rollout plans. I would also watch the open Zebra synchronization and release work, rather than treating a successful public testnet start as the end of testing.

After the network reaches block 3,543,405, the measurements that matter are more concrete: whether upgraded nodes agree on the chain, the distribution of block intervals over a substantial mainnet sample, stale blocks and reorganizations, wallet-sync performance, and actual confirmation experience at clearly stated recipient policies. The NSM balance and fee split should also match what the new consensus rules prescribe. A single favorable testnet median or a few unusually fast blocks cannot settle those questions.

The distinction I would focus on is this: NU7 can make Zcash more responsive without making every transfer instantly final, and it can recycle fees without permanently burning them. For most holders, the event is primarily a compatibility milestone. For anyone still using Sprout, it is a time-sensitive access issue. Those are more useful conclusions than trying to turn today’s price move into a guarantee about tomorrow.

Zcash NU7: frequently asked questions

When will Zcash NU7 activate?

Developers agreed to target mainnet block 3,543,405, estimated around November 5, 2026. At the October 21, 08:55 UTC research cutoff, the height still needed to be incorporated into the final deployment specification and compatible mainnet releases; activation had not happened.

Will NU7 make every Zcash payment three times faster?

No. It changes the target block spacing from 75 to 25 seconds, which can reduce waiting time for confirmations. Real confirmation intervals, transaction inclusion, exchange policies and proof-of-work reorganization risks remain variable.

Will I lose ZEC if I use a shielded wallet?

Not merely because it is shielded. The exceptional risk applies to funds left in Sprout, which depend on transactions NU7 would prohibit. Other supported pools and v5/v6 transaction formats are not being retired by that rule.

Are 60% of Zcash fees burned forever?

No. NU7’s planned rules remove that portion of aggregate block fees from circulation and account for it in the NSM balance, from which value can later be reissued automatically through mining subsidies under the specified schedule.

Does the upgrade change Zcash’s 21 million maximum supply?

No. The design preserves the maximum cap and adapts per-block rewards and halving heights to the shorter target interval, with minor rounding effects.

Further reading: Cryptolinks homepage · Latest cryptocurrency news · Zcash guide · Privacy coins and tokens · Previous Zcash rally coverage · Zcash governance coverage.

Cryptolinks editorial disclosure: This article is informational reporting and analysis, not personalized investment advice.
